Who is Milhais ?
Aníbal Augusto Milhais, commonly known as "Soldado Milhões" (Soldier Millions), was a Portuguese soldier and national hero during World War I. Born on July 9, 1895, in Valongo, Portugal, he gained legendary status for his remarkable bravery during the Battle of La Lys in April 1918.
Despite being vastly outnumbered by German forces, Milhais single-handedly held off enemy troops with his Lewis machine gun, allowing his fellow soldiers to retreat and reorganize. Afterward, he wandered behind enemy lines for three days before rejoining his unit. His courage earned him the nickname "Soldado Milhões," signifying his worth as greater than millions.
He was awarded the highest Portuguese military honor, the Order of the Tower and Sword, and became a symbol of Portuguese valor and resilience in World War I. He passed away on June 3, 1970.
